“Call to Nebraska Artists” - Lincoln’s Next Public Art Project - Serving Hands: Celebrating 50 Years

Matt Schulte, Executive Director of Campus Life, announces a “Call to Nebraska Artists” for Serving Hands: Celebrating 50 years of Campus Life and invites Artists – professional and emerging – to submit Proposals.
Serving Hands will feature 6-foot-tall fiberglass hand sculptures and is modeled after other Public Art Projects such as Lincoln’s Tour de Lincoln (Bikes), Illuminating Lincoln: Lighthouse (Light Bulbs) and Nebraska by Heart (Hearts). The artwork will be on display in Lincoln May through October, 2019.
According to Schulte, “Our goal is to see 50 sculptures symbolic of the 50th Anniversary celebration of Campus Life, an organization which has impacted teens in and around Lincoln through camps, retreats, weekly clubs and mentoring relationships. Through my years as director it amazes me how many people young and old tell me the impact Campus Life has had on their lives. Fifty years is a significant milestone to be celebrated. The world has changed so much during that time, but we have continued to be there for teens through it all. Our strength and longevity have come from the faithful supporters, staff, and leadership.
We chose ‘hands’ as our concept for the Project as a representation of our mission, as we love serving the community and reaching teens in difficult circumstances. We also know that this heart of service is shared by many and look forward to celebrating our 50th Anniversary in such an amazing and creative way!”
An informational meeting (not required) about the project will be held at 7:00 p.m., September 6th, in Lincoln’s Old City Hall, 920 O St. A representative of Icon Poly, the manufacturer of the hands, will be available to answer questions and artist application forms will be distributed. Application forms can also be found online at http://yfclincoln.org/serving_hands/.
Artists may use acrylic paint, mosaics or stained glass; the completed sculptures will be displayed outdoors. Artists may submit up to five proposals. Submissions are due by October 3, 2018. Proposals will be juried and those accepted will move forward to the Sponsorship phase of the Project. Sponsored Artists will receive a $500 material stipend. The completion date for sponsored artists will be mid-April, 2019. In addition to their stipend, Artists will also receive one-third of their sculpture’s proceeds during a public auction slated for September, 2019.
